The three starter pokemon were revealed to be the standard water, fire and grass types.

Froakie the water type, Fennekin the fire type and Chespin the grass type, listed in order from left to right.

Froakie

This water type Pokemon is based off the Tree-Frog. This is due to Froakie's flexible legs and long arms. The white foam may play a larger role as Frokie evolves into its secondary and final forms. It is speculated that Froakie will become a dual Water / Fighting Pokemon. Many people also see potential in Froakie becoming a Water / Flying or Water / Ice Pokemon. Time will tell what Froakies eventual final typing willl be.

Fennekin

This Fire type Pokemon is based off the Fenneck Fox. The large tufts of fur is a nod to this. This Fire type is speculated to become a Fire / Psychic type. But others have debated a Fire / Ghost typing for its evolutions.

This is definatly the ''cute'' starter of this generation, and is definatly the most marketable. Fennekins legs seem to be very small, almost under-developed which leads me to believe this will be a fast starter with a high speed stat.

Chespin

This Grass type Pokemon is difficult to pinpoint what it is based off. A Hedgehog and Chesnut come to mind as it has spikes added to the  green shell covering the top of its head. This is also supported due to the fact that Chespin’s Japanese name is Harimaron and it appears to be a combination of hedgehog and chestnut. During the trailer shown of Pokemon X and Y Chespins spikes seem to become sharper as it attacks. It is widely speculated that Chespin will become a Grass / Dark type , but others have debated that it may become a Grass / Ground type due to its mole like features.

Xerneas

This large beautiful Pokemon is known as Xerneas. It is presumably the mascot for Pokemon X and the main Legendary. It is 3.0m tall and weighs 215kg. Xerneas's pupils resemble the letter X also. Not much

information is known about the Pokemon. The legendary Pokemon this generation are based off of Norse mythology.

Yveltal

This large demonic looking Pokemon is known as Yveltal. It is presumably the mascot for Pokemon Y and the main Legendary. It is 5.8m tall and weighs 203kg. Yveltal clearly resembles the letter Y, as do the patterns or veins running throughout it. Not much information is known about it. The legendary pokemon this generation are based off of Norse mythology.
